Movie 1.1 sets the scene for many of the conceptual issues that are addressed in the remaining chapters. The main issue is the extent to which we succumb to illusion when it comes to scientific enquiry about the explanation of behaviour.

The problem is traced back to the structure of our language in a seminal paper by B. F. Skinner (1977), 'Why I am not a cognitive psychologist'.

The animations contained in the video illustrate Skinner's argument and in doing so they prepare the ground for understanding what is so distinctive about the science of behaviour analysis.
